Moving Hypervisors ESXi to Proxmox

Within my home lab where I host both stuff for my family and friends to use. I also host some things for my business. First in case you did not know a hypervisor is software that allows you to run full computer systems on top of it. There are two types of hypervisors a type 1 and type 2. Type 1 is what ESXi, Promox and XCP-ng are, and they run directly on the server without an OS like windows in-between it. Type 2 runs within an OS like Windows.

The reason that I’m moving hypervisors is that mainly my hardware is older, but still works for me. They are three Dell R710s. Yes, I would like to replace them with something a bit newer, but as I stated they still do what I need them to do, and I want to keep my wife happy by not buying new hardware now.

The main reason for the move is since the version of ESXi that I’m using on the hardware is getting older and has not been patched for a bit. The other reason is the announced agreement that Broadcom will be acquiring VMware. This has my hope for the future of VMware not looking so good. After all Broadcom has done so little with Symantec after acquiring them.

It has been a good change so far. Two out of three of my main servers are running Proxmox now. It’s good to have a Hypervisor that is patched and current. Most of the Linux Virtual Machines I just recreated them for the most part and just imported the configuration files when needed. The few Windows Server / Windows 10 Virtual Machines on the other hand are the last ones that I’m working on.

I have one Windows 10 virtual machine hard drive converted already and will be working on it in the next week. It has been great learning new things and different ways to get things done. Once I’m done with moving my Windows virtual machines over. Bye-bye to the world of VMware, not that it wasn’t great. It did what it did very well, and many other products and services can be used within VMware.

As I’m still learning, and this process is not complete I’ll update this or create a new post with my updates.
